Nowadays, the city of Dubai is known for its billionaire visitors and its eclectic mix of old Arabian culture with new Western ideas and buildings. It was not until the past decade that the city of Dubai became known for these two things. This desert area is continuing to grow at a rapid rate and it shows no signs of stopping any time soon.
The city of Dubai is located on the coast of the Persian Gulf in the country that is currently called the United Arab Emirates. The government is a constitutional monarchy, which is the much like many countries in Europe. The area was known for ease of trade by the sea, especially, in recent years, of oil. However, this all has changed since the middle of the 90s.
Although still focused on oil trade, the city of Dubai began to also focus on tourism and build up their trade with wealthy nations. In the mid 1990s the government of Dubai decided to start making some very radical changes to the city. The Burj Dubai skyscraper, which is currently still under construction, is now the tallest building in the world with its unique design, it is one of the most modern buildings in the world. The city also revamped its local transportation to include newer, more luxurious buses and subways and to have more cab service. While Dubai officials have focused on trying to modernize the city and attempting to make some changes towards westernization, the old culture of Dubai has not been lost. Camel herders can still be seen herding camels while expensive automobiles speed by on the highway. And, the social culture of the area is still just about the same, even though the buildings and infrastructure may have changed.
It is really interesting to look from a distance at a city that wants to mix their unique social culture with some of the elements of western culture. The city of Dubai is one of the first to endeavor to start such a radical change to the city, while still attempting to maintain its original social culture. It will be extremely exicitng to see how the city grows over the next few decades because this city does not plan on stopping its renovations any time soon.

Walking into a giant warehouse store it is impressive to see how the merchandise is stored. Many therapists suggest that much of what people have stored on there inner shelves is unhelpful to living a full and vigorous life.
Many therapists attempt to help patients free their shelves of items that can do damage and lead to self destructive behavior. Any retailer items sitting on a shelf is taking up space and reduces the value. These items are cleared out to make way for something that adds value. What happens when we walk down the aisles of our inner world and begin to take inventory? For many people clearing the clutter from the shelves, real or metaphorical, creates space, peace, and value.
The first step in an inner inventory is seldom fun. It is important to do inventory in a store, it demands time and attention. The goal isn’t to immediately restock, clear out, or change the displays. The goal is first to know what is what is there and what is not. It used to be a process of weekly or monthly physical counting. As managers got smarter and technology allowed, inventory turned into an automatic and continual process. Many folks don’t regularly do a personal inventory, but as it becomes a standard practice, it also becomes an automatic and conscious process. Taking personal inventory requires honesty and introspection. Similarly to entering a messy warehouse it is overwhelming and impossible to take in all at once. Inventory is one item at a time. Examine what is on the inner shelves by observing without judgment.
The items on our inner shelves can range from the horrific to the sublime. Often we discover some meaningless issue taking up space. Remove it from the shelf and clear space for something new. The nature of any large society is that different people have different jobs. Inevitably, though, the different jobs people have will mean they’ll have different lifestyles, due to differences in income, workload and stress rates. A doctor wouldn’t be capable of telling the difference between a Houston contract warehouse and a Houston 3PL, just as a store man wouldn’t be able to educate the doctor of how to complete a double bypass operation. No doubt the education level of the doctor would be greater and the physical strength of the store man would be more. But is it our occupation that causes us to have the life we do, or are we naturally pre-disposed to have a certain type of job?
This question has an underlying premise which may be ill-informed. It assumes that we are all in jobs which we like, which can be safely assumed to not be the case. Many people are currently working in jobs they did not want to do when they were kids, thinking of how they would be carrying out their lives. Many have also received education in an area different to the place they are working in, and most of us have dreams of some day leaving our jobs and doing what we really want to.
Although we exist in a so-called advanced civilization, these problems have never been dealt with to any significant extent, we simply see them as the way the world is. Everyday we’re given a new piece of technology that costs more to get, that we’ll need to work harder and for longer to pay for, and that will inevitably break down and cause more stress like every other product we own. Isn’t it about time scientists set out to create a product that made us have to workload less, or made our work easier?
You might think that items like machinery and vehicles have made the work of people like loggers or those doing physical jobs much easier, and they have to a certain extent. But the people who use these items don’t see any gains, they still have to work for the same length of time. The benefit is only seen by the bosses, who get the profits of the increasing amount of work that can be done. If a machine were invented that made something easier, can you imagine a boss allowing staff to work less due to the new invention?
The reason no product that actually reduces workload is created is because such a device would hurt the system we currently have created, or at least those at the top of the system. If we had more time to pay attention and didn’t have to work so much, we might start to begin seeing areas of life that are freely available to all. This would be bad news for the economy!
