Tracking Down A Job In PR When The Economy Is Bad

February 1st, 2010

It is very stressful if you are searching for a job. Those new to the workforce face the quandry of not having experience and those near retirement age may be turned away because employers want a long-term relationship with their new hires. Couple these challenges with a difficult economy that plays a role in everyone’s search and even hunters in their prime may find themselves wrought with frustration. Workers specializing in certain fields may experience greater difficulty than others. When the economy slows, there are cutbacks and production slows everywhere, but certain fields are hit harder. If you work in a profession like marketing, advertising, or public relations, you might be one of the first to go. Some fields are considered expendable during tough times, and often advertising is the first to go. If you are a public relations professional, search in non-traditional places for work. Certain manufacturing and health industries will continue to grow, even during an economic downturn, and these may be the exact companies to search when looking for work. If you are a job hunter in the Texas area, look to San Antonio scaffolding or San Antonio Insulation companies. These fields may continue to thrive, even when other companies face trouble.

Another sector public relations job seekers may may find hiring is healthcare. Regardless of the poor economy, people are still going to need medical attention. While a public relations worker may not be indisposable to the medical needs of patients, hospitals and other medical facilities will continue to advertise. If their business is not suffering, they will continue advertising and working in the community as much as always. Instead of cutbacks, they will continue to grow, providing a chance for PR pros to share their public relations talents.

You should consider a job education. The public school system, often hires those with a public or media relations background. Check with your local board of education if your area schools do not have a representative. You will be surprised how often the board of education interacts with the media and with the public. They may be looking to have someone on staff for “just in case” instances, or they may hire in an effort to grow a program or initiative. If your initial inquiries get you nowhere, branch your search to nearby counties. When making inquiries, be sure to find out if they have a public relations representative or staff. At least this way, you will be aware of future opportunities.

Finally, look at jobs in law enforcement. Detectives and officers frequently interact with the media in a variety of ways. Maybe it will be stressful and frustrating, but it can also be rewarding for both parties. If you have the qualifications to serve as a liaison between the media, the community, and law enforcement, this may be the job for you.

If you are job hunting, do not despair. Think of unusual places to look and get to work.
