10 Suggestions For Beating The Winter Time Blues

February 7th, 2010

Was it only a few short months ago that you were applying your tanning lotion and sitting poolside sipping lemonade? While the days of tanning lotions, ice cold lemonade, and sunbathing have quickly passed, the winter months of January and February have brought their cold and dreary days to many in North America. As the cold weather has made its way through the land, some folks find themselves looking for a way to beat seasonal depression. In fact, a good many people find themselves fighting seasonal depression as the dark days of winter bring sadness to their lives.

While most of your friends and neighbors have not been diagnosed with clinical depression, chances are many of your acquaintances may have days where they feel cranky or blue, simply because of the weather conditions. Perhaps you are someone who finds yourself succumbing to seasonal depression.

You are most certainly not alone and it may be a good idea to consult with your doctor if you find your daily outlook severely altered. If you determine though that you have no lingering medical condition, but simply get the blues as the winter months drag on, why not consider incorporating a few of the following fun ideas for beating the winter doldrums.

1. Have an indoor picnic complete with checkered tablecloth and all the summer foods available for you to eat.

2. Make yummy smores using an indoor fireplace or even settle for good old microwave smores.

3. Throw a bash with a fun theme such as luau, 80’s, or Super Bowl.

4. Plan a getaway or vacation to a favorite locale.

5. Sign up for lessons for something you have always wanted to learn.

6. Work a jigsaw puzzle, crossword puzzle, sudoku, or any puzzle designed to challenge your intellect.

7. Stay physically fit by developing a regular exercise program.

8. Eat healthy foods which give the body a boost of useable energy.

9. Take up a new hobby.

10. Volunteer some time at a local charity.

Perhaps at least a few of the preceding ten suggestions will inspire some excitement during the time of year when it can be easy to succumb to the doldrums. Just consider the many benefits of maintaining a personal exercise program as well as the benefits of a healthy diet. Incorporating those suggestions will not only help during the winter months but every passing season. Developing new hobbies and keeping in touch with friends through organized events can give you something fun to plan and anticipate. If you have the available resources, consider taking a much needed break from the everyday routine. Taking a long weekend to recharge or an extended trip to a warm or tropical climate may be just the ticket needed to make it through to spring.

Last of all, volunteering not only provides purpose and direction for you, but can be uplifting and a source of encouragement for those who will benefit from your time and energy. Keeping active and purposeful is a wonderful way to lessen or altogether avoid the problem of seasonal or post-holiday blues.

Why Is Youth So Important?

February 7th, 2010

We live in a society that’s increasingly geared towards judging people purely based on the way they look especially women. What kind of effects does this have on the self-esteem of us all? Even those who are very good looking still feel a need to use tanning lotion to appear like they have a real tan. In fact, tanning lotions can be great when compared to real tans, which give you, cancer at the cost of looking good. Why is it that so many of us feel the need to alter their appearance in order to please others?

Women who are too interested with their appearance can often go too far, there’s no doubting that. You can just take a peek at some of the plastic surgery catastrophes that have occurred over the years, as celebrities who have become concerned about drooping cheeks and worry-lines appearing have designed to alter the chemical compounds in their face. Sometimes, when it’s done subtly, this can create a nicer looking, though still artificial, face. At other times, when the work goes too far, the results can look nothing short of bizarre. It’s often the women who get this much surgery who think they still need more, as they’re unwilling to accept that no amount of technology can stop them from the fact that they’re getting old.

There’s no doubt that in this day and age we’re obsessed with being young. It’s believed that to be at a young age and free is the best time we can possibly have. Yet why is this so? Are young individuals actually better than any other? Well, it’s definitely so that they have more fun, as they likely haven’t got the kinds of worries older people tend to have, and they’re quite far from worrying about their own mortality or taking care of some kids. But the main issue is that they have a larger amount of spending income.

Since teenagers and twenty-somethings often stay at home, don’t take care of kids to pay for and maybe don’t have their own house or car, they’ll have plenty of money if they’ve got a job, or generous parents. No wonder, then, that the groups selling items that wouldn’t be wanted among those looking to save their money can target this group.

Teenagers and those in their youth have had their minds altered into believing that it’s most vital to spend on expensive products in order to be stylish, and many of those who are older have been convinced that the only way to be a worthy member of society is to be young.

It’s a strange thing that’s developed, and one that isn’t based in reality. There’s no doubt that a lot can be learned from the older people of the world, and a deeper respect for those who have seen more than us can mean a richer and increasingly meaningful life. Since it’s not profitable for anyone to mention this, though, don’t expect to hear it in a TV commercial anytime in the future.
